The Federal Training centre for Teachers of Health Sciences was established by the Federal Ministry of Health in October 1976 due to ineffective and inefficient health services in Nigeria and absence of trained Tutors in already established Schools of Hygiene and Health Technology especially in the field of Environmental Health. At present, there are three teacher-education programmes at the Centre; the other two are Nurse/Midwife/Public Health Nurse Tutors Programme and Primary Health Care Tutors' Programme. These programmes/Departments are referred to as Federally Funded Schools, by the University College Hospital Management.
The fourth school within the federally funded schools is the Community Health Officers' Programme.Many of the English speaking African countries had benefited from this programme e.g. Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Gambia, etc. who also had similar health problems. The School is affiliated to College of Medicine and the Institute of Education, University of Ibadan in 1987. The course runs for a period of one calendar year from October to September of the following year. Students are drawn from Ministries, Parastatals, Â Armed Forces and from all part of federation with well equipped season lecturers and supporting staff.
The Department has trained over six hundred and forty-five (645) health tutors and has also enhanced the knowledge of Health Workers from Federal, States and Local Government Areas, in the field of Environmental Management, Health Administration Management, Universal precautions, etc.
CORE ACTIVITIES OF DEPARTMENT
- To equip the student-tutors with sound academic and professional ability that will enable them function as tutors.
- To provide student-tutors with adequate skills for conducting and carrying out research with report writing.
- To help student-tutors to select the right teaching method that will enhance effective learning.
- To equip the student-tutors with skills that will enhance their knowledge in environmental health issues and other health related issues.
- To prepare health caregivers with adequate health and environmental knowledge that will enhance their performance in the society.
- Training Health workers to become good health administrators and managers.
PRE-REQUISITES FOR ADMISSION
Admission is confined to experienced Environmental Health Officers who possess the following qualifications:
- West African School Certificate or its equivalent
- Royal Society of Health (London) for Health Inspector or West African Health Examinations Board Diploma for Environmental Health Officers or HND (Environmental Health)
- First degree in health related areas plus 1 and 2 above
- At least, two (2) years post - professional qualification experience.
DURATION OF COURSE
- The course runs for a period of one calendar year from October to September of the following year.
CERTIFICATION
- Diploma for Tutors of Health Sciences (Environmental Health) of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan is awarded to the successful candidate at the completion of the programme.
- The department has only one Sub-Unit which is Health Administration and Management and Continuing Education for Health Technician Unit.
